The first thing we must do is differentiate the type of HDMI cable that we will need depending on the connections we need. When buying it, we must consider the type of connector that we will find at both ends. We can find 5 types of connectors in the market:

Type A or standard connector:

It is the most usual. We usually find it in televisions, consoles, most computers and, in general, in medium-sized devices. It consists of 19 pins and a size of 13.9 x 4.45 mm.

Type B: 

Supports double the bandwidth, but its use has not yet been generalized. It has 29 pins and dimensions of 21.2 x 4.45 mm.

Type C or mini connector: 

It is a reduced version of type A and designed for smaller devices such as video cameras. It has 19 pins and a size of 10.42 x 2.42 mm.

Type D or micro connector: 

Like the previous one, it is designed for small or portable devices, such as mobile phones or cameras. It is even smaller, since despite having 19 pins it only measures 5.8 millimeters.

Type E: 

Almost not used. It is able to withstand high temperatures and sudden movements, so its use is practically limited to the automotive industry.

We must also note that it is not necessary that both ends are equal . For example, if we want to connect a camera to a television we should probably use a cable with one end of type D and the other type A.

Once observed what type of connector is needed, we must choose between the different cable versions that exist :

HDMI 1.0: 

Was born in 2002 and is the first version. It allows a resolution of up to 1080p / 60Hz and includes 8 audio channels in 192 kHz / 24-bit, in addition to a maximum transfer of 4.9 Gbit / s.

HDMI 1.1: 

Appears in 2004 and is practically the same as the previous version, but adds DVD-Audio compatibility and the anti-piracy system.

HDMI 1.2: 

Support for One Bit Audio is added. In addition, it allowed the use of resolutions and custom configurations.

HDMI 1.3: 

With its appearance in 2006 great changes begin to arrive. Increased bandwidth up to 10.2 Gbit / s, the amount of color bits possible, the color space and support for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD is added.

HDMI 1.4: 

Had to wait until 2009 for a new version, capable of supporting the resolution in 4K, but limited to 24 Hz to be able to send and receive data through an Ethernet connection on the same cable.

HDMI 2.0: 

Its release to the market was the most important update and is currently the most used . It has a bandwidth of 18 Gbit / s, allows video in 4K resolution, support for 32 audio channels and capacity to transport the signal simultaneously of 2 videos in streaming.

HDMI 2.1: 

Was launched in 2017. With it has been increased even more bandwidth and allows up to 10K, but there is still a time to popularize this type of cable.

Finally, when buying an HDMI cable we should think how many contents are we going to consume in 4K or 8K? Another fact to keep in mind is that most televisions have resolutions 720P (HD) or 1080P (Full HD). In addition, not all services offer the 4K image format. It is true that steps are being taken in this direction, but it has not yet become the standard, as it surely will in the coming years.
